Edinburgh for Booklovers, activities and places to visit

Table of Contents

1. Literary pub tour

This is one of the most unique experiences you can get in Edinburgh. The award-winning Literary Pub Tour takes you on a walk to different pubs, while stopping at literary-related spots on the way. The best thing is, the tour guides are professional actors who play different roles, creating a fun, humorous and interactive tour while you learn about Scotland's greatest writers.

For just £25 (€28,88 or $33,69) you can join this 2-hour tour on every thursday until sunday evening.

Just a heads up: The speakers do have a heavy Scottish accent so keep your focus on them to not miss the great storytelling.

2. Book Lovers tour

This is another award-winning tour with storytelling about Edinburgh's literary masters. This 1.5 hour tour can be booked for any time and day online through their website. Unfortunately, this tour can only be booked with groups of a minimum of twelve people, or as a private tour with a minimum of 6 people. However, this tour is well worth it to get a personal experience and learn many of the literary sites in Edinburgh.

Prices of the group tours vary, while the private tour is £200 (€230,99 or $269,56) in total.

3. Writers' museum

This museum is a real gem for all (classic) book lovers. The Writer's Museum, located in a beautiful 17th Century building honors the three greatest Scottish writers; Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson. Although the museum is not big, you get to know the writers a lot better. This is because of the artefacts that they have, like Burns' writing desk, but also because they tell the life stories of these beloved writers.

Entrance to The Writers' Museum is free!

4. Elephant House café

In this coffee shop, J.K. Rowling wrote many times on the Harry Potter series. Besides that, this café is one of the coziest in Edinburgh to get a coffee and read a book. Maybe you will even feel the same creative inspiration here as the famous writer while looking out the window.

Thank you for reading this post and enjoy your time in Edinburgh! Don't forget to stay open to spontaneity!
