Copenhagen is very diverse when looking at its neighbourhoods; each has a different combination of characteristics. Oftentimes when visiting a new city, people tend to just choose accommodation in the city centre, but Copenhagen is so well-connected that staying in a different area will not be a burden at all.
Of course you can still choose to stay in the city centre, but read this post to find out if that really aligns with your priorities and interests! Choosing the right neighbourhood to stay in will definitely enhance your experience in Copenhagen. You can also use this list to find out which neighbourhoods you would like to visit as well.
This list is made based on my own experiences and information from the neighbourhood guide by VisitCopenhagen. At the end of this post, a summary of each neighbourhood and its characteristics is listed. If you would like more information or tips, check out my other posts about Copenhagen!

1. Interests
1.1 Art - Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Christiana
For the artsy travellers, Nørrebro, Vesterbro or Christiana are the ideal neighbourhoods to stay in. In Nørrebro and Christiana you can find a lot of interesting street art by just walking around to find your breakfast spot. Always keep your eyes open in these neighbourhoods as there is so much to see!
In Vesterbro the best art galleries of Copenhagen are located. If you are staying in the neighbourhood it makes it very easy to look around the whole neighbourhood and try and visit them all while taking breaks at your hotel or in one of the cafés. The Glyptoteket museum (my favorite museum) is also located right at the edge of Vesterbro.
1.2 History and culture - Carlsberg City & Indre By
If you are someone who is interested in history and culture, like me, Carlsberg City District and Indre By are perfect for you.
Carlsberg City is an area in Vesterbro which has much cultural heritage, which is reflected in its historic architecture and its connection to Carlsberg beer. Many walking tours are offered in this area with the topic of Carlsberg City's rich history whilst the "Home of Carlsberg" beer experience and several art galleries are also located here.
In Indre By, the city centre of Copenhagen, many of the cultural hotspots of the city are located. Historic hotspots include Nyhavn, Tivoli, Rosenborg Slot and Christiansborg. It's safe to say that this neighbourhood is very rich in history and will entertain you around every corner. Staying in this area means having easy access to all these locations, but because of this, it is also very busy on its streets and inside its restaurants and cafés.
1.3 Shopping - Vesterbro, Indre By (Strøget and Nørreport) & Nørrebro
If you want to bring home great souvenirs in the form of clothing, home decor and other memorabilia, Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Strøget will be great to stay in. In these neighbourhoods you can have the best shopping days and drop your finds off at your accommodation in no-time.
Vesterbro has many interesting boutique shops and is home to Fisketorvet shopping mall, which is a well-known shopping mall by Copenhagen locals.
If you want a more sustainable and local shopping experience, Nørrebro is the right fit for you. This neighbourhood has many second-hand and vintage shops, but also artisanal and alternative shops.
Strøget is the perfect place to shop at high-fashion stores and large chain shops, but also Danish design. Located in Indre-By, with 1.1 km of non-stop stores, you will definitely succeed in finding what you need. Close to Strøget you can also find Magasin du Nord, which is a large shopping centre with more high-end brands.
For souvenirs, I would recommend going a bit further from the city's main attractions like Nyhavn. I still bought my souvenirs in the city centre (Indre-By) but in the area around the Nørreport metro station. In this area you will find attractions like Rundetaarn and the Old University Library. This area is full of affordable souvenir shops. Be sure to check out the street called 'Nansensgade', which is well-known for its boutique shops, galeries, vintage shops and cafés.
1.4 Nightlife - Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Indre By
Have a fun time in Copenhagen's bars and clubs, while getting home quick and safe in Vesterbro and Nørrebro. These areas have hip bars and clubs for young people and entry fees are generally affordable. In Indre By you can find a lot of bars and clubs close to each other which is ideal for a night of bar-hopping.The clubs in this area are more expensive but have a great atmosphere and attract many people!
1.5 Architecture - Sydhavnen, Carlsberg City & Nordhavn
The architecture in Sydhavnen can be perfectly described as old meets new. In this neighbourhood you will find old working-class buildings, an old fishing port and old barns but also modern buildings in a green oasis and waterfront houses. Make sure to take the ferry to the neighbourhood to receive the ultimate experience.
As mentioned before, Carlsberg City is full of historic architecture, but it is also growing in modern architecture, creating an interesting combination. In Nordhavn, Copenhagen's newest neighbourhood you will find very unique architecture. The infrastructure in this area is created with the idea of being sustainable and innovative. This neighbourhood is truly one of a kind in my opinion.
1.6 Food - Frederiksberg, Refshaleøen & Nørrebro
If you are a foodie, Frederiksberg, Refshaleøen & Nørrebro can give you an array of what you are looking for. In Frederiksberg you are at the right place for upscale dining. This neighbourhood has Michelin-star restaurants but also traditional French cuisine, wine bars and local brasseries in 16th Century buildings.
Refshaleøen offers a combination of street food, hip restaurants and even a Michelin-star restaurant. Although this area does not have as many restaurants as Frederiksberg, staying in this neighbourhood is still worth it. The quality of the restaurants, cafes and food trucks that this neighbourhood has, including its cosy atmosphere next to the water, makes sure of this.
Nørrebro is the perfect place for people who have a lower food budget but still appreciate a well-made meal. This neighbourhood is full of food trucks and cosy, small restaurants to fulfill your needs.
1.7 Local experiences - Nordvest
Nordvest is located in the north-west of Copenhagen, about 25 minutes away from Nyhavn with the metro. This neighbourhood can be described as 'undiscovered', since it is actually just a residential neighbourhood with just a few accommodation options. These facts make Nordvest the best neighbourhood for a local experience, away from the crowds. The local vibes will be found in the small independent shops, cheap accommodations (mostly Airbnb’s or apartments), the diverse population and even a community-driven brewery. I think Nordvest is the perfect neighbourhood to stay in to find out how the locals live and contribute to the city.
1.8 Nature- Østerbro, Sydhavnen, Christianshavn, Frederiksberg
Luckily, Copenhagen is a pretty green city with many parts of the city having large parks, open fields and a lot of open water. Therefore you have many options of neighbourhoods to stay in when you are looking for fresh air and walks in nature.
In this part I would like to recommend Østerbro the most. It is home to the largest public park, Fælledparken, as well as a beach park, and you can walk along the water towards the Little Mermaid statue. For me, this sounds like the perfect neighbourhood to take walks in while still getting a good sense of the city due to its central location.
2. Priorities
2.1 Budget - Nørrebro, Nordvest, Brønshøj, Husum & Tingbjerg
For people on a budget, Norrebro is the best option as it is close to the city centre of Copenhagen. From this neighbourhood, you can be in the centre of it all in just 10 minutes. Norrebro also has its own train station which is part of the routes of Copenhagen's main train station.
Even cheaper areas which do require a bit more travel time are Nordvest, Brønshøj, Husum, and Tingbjerg.
2.2 Close to most attractions - Indre By and Vesterbro
If you really want most of the attractions to be just a walking distance away from you I would recommend staying in Indre By or Vesterbro. Although the other neighbourhoods are totally worth it, these neighbourhoods can offer the most and are objectively also the most captivating.
2.3 Relaxation - Carlsberg & Nordvest
For relaxation, you can't go wrong with Carlsberg & Nordvest, which are both suitable for different budgets. Carlsberg can be expensive to stay in, but you will get good value for money according to the masses. This neighbourhood also has the best spa in Denmark as awarded in 2021 to top it all off. AIRE Ancient Baths is a place you cannot miss if you are looking for relaxation during your city trip to Copenhagen.
Nordvest is a lot cheaper to stay in, and you will be able to relax thoroughly by enjoying yhe quietness outside and the lack of crowds.
