1. Copenhagen is expensive to visit
First thing to know is that a trip to Copenhagen can cost more money than anticipated. But you can still travel here on a budget when you keep the following things in mind after you have set your personal budget:
Avoid getting food and drinks in touristy areas like Nyhavn
Download a currency calculator app
Use student or other discounts
Buy the Copenhagen card
Use the metro to get around the city
Stay at a hostel - I recommend staying at Urban Camper Hostel. Check out my review here. (Not sponsored)
2. Take the train or metro from the airport
Compared to other cities, Copenhagen Airport is very close to the city itself. This makes it faster, and a lot cheaper, to just take the public transport to your accommodation. That is why I recommend to just take the train, which takes you to the Central Station, or taking the metro to different parts of the city.
You can buy the tickets at one of the airport machines, which will give clear instructions for you based on where you want to go. Public transport is also included in the Copenhagen Card, so make sure to activate your card when you arrive at the airport.
3. Don't overlook the day trips
There are many day trips to take from Copenhagen, which you should definitely do if you have the time for this. The connection between the city and the rest of the country is very impressive, plus it is easy to navigate. I recommend using the official Danish transport website (https://www.dsb.dk/en/), to find the transport routes and prices.
My favorite day trip from Copenhagen is to Frederiksborg Castle, which is only 1 hour away by train.

4. All neighbourhoods are worth visiting
When I visited Copenhagen I mainly read about the more known neigbourhoods in the centre of the city, but I overlooked other neighbourhoods. Ofcourse, I did not have enough time to visit all of them. That is why I recommend reading about all of the neighbourhoods and finding which ones interest you most.
Instead of only visiting the neighbourhoods the most sites, I highly recommend Christiana, Christianshavn, Vesterbro and Nørrebro for unique shopping, art and great food.

5. Copenhagen is very safe for biking
Copenhagen is the perfect city to bike around in, even during the winter season. On many roads, the bike lanes are separate from the car lanes, bikes even often have their own traffic lights. What I am trying to say, is that biking in Copenhagen is very safe.
Make sure to rent a bike here at one of the shops and spend a day biking around. You will see much of the city and get a sense of its layout.
6. The Copenhagen Card is worth the money for most people
If you are planning to visit many sights and museums and use the public transport (in and outside of Copenhagen), I highly recommend buying the Copenhagen Card. For most people with these types of plans in the city, the total of all activities and public transport trips will be more than what they have paid for the Copenhagen Card. If you are not sure yet if this will be the case for you as well, you can check out and use their savings calculator! (https://copenhagencard.com/attractions)
If you want to read about how much money I saved by using this card, you can check out my post here.
7. Visit during summer or the holiday season
The best periods to visit Copenhagen are during summer and the holiday season. The city comes alive during summer and the colors of the city are mesmerizing. I visited Copenhagen during the holiday season and in my opinion that was the best choice. Copenhagen is so cosy during winter and the Christmas decorations and markets made me so happy. I really can't compare this experience with any other destination during the holiday season.
Unfortunately, because of the popularity, these periods are also the most expensive, especially for accommodation. To save a bit of money, you should visit Copenhagen in May, June or September, and the christmas decorations and markets already start in November.
