1. National Museum of Denmark

The National Museum of Denmark is a treasure trove for anyone interested in Danish history and culture. It covers everything from the Stone Age to modern times, with artifacts that tell stories of Vikings, medieval kings, and everyday life throughout the centuries. The museum’s exhibitions include artefacts like ancient tools, royal treasures, and traditional costumes.

Visitors can also experience the reconstructed Viking ship and burial sites, which offer a hands-on understanding of Denmark’s early history. The museum’s layout makes it easy to follow the timeline of Danish culture, making it a perfect starting point for your trip to Copenhagen!

Tickets for the National Museum of Denmark cost 150 DKK (€20.08 or $23.40) per person, but are free for people under 18 years old. They can be bought online or on location at the ticket desk.

2. Visit the Royal Danish Theatre for a Performance

The Royal Danish Theatre has been a cornerstone of Copenhagen’s cultural scene since the 18th century. It hosts ballet, opera, and drama performances that showcase Danish and international talent. The theatre building itself is an architectural gem in my opinion, with a mix of classic and modern styles.

The theatre often features works by Danish playwrights and composers, giving insight into the country’s creative heritage. If you are not able to attend a performance, you can try to still take a look inside and experience the charm o the building.

Tickets for perfomances can actually be less expensive thank you think, so make sure to check out the current performances on their website: https://kglteater.dk/en/shows.

3. Glyptoteket

Glyptoteket is my absolute favourite museum in Copenhagen. This museum is home to many artefacts related to several time periods and regions, making it interesting for any visitor. Besides this, the museum also hosts temporary expositions. The building of the Glyptoteket Museum is fascinating as well and there is an area where they describe the architecture as well.

I am personally very interested in Greek, Roman and Egyptian history which all have their own permanent section in Glyptoteket. Furthermore, Danish art is also exhibited which allowed me to get more knowledge about the Danish culture and history. Due to all of this, I spent a good 3 hours in the museum. The museum shop also has many interesting souvenirs, so take a good look in there as well!

Tickets for Glyptoteket are actually cheaper to buy online for 135 DKK (18,08 or $21,03) at their offcial website: https://glyptoteket.dk/.

4. Rosenborg Castle

Rosenborg Castle is a Renaissance-era palace that houses the Danish crown jewels and royal regalia. Built in the early 1600s, the castle offers a look into the lives of Danish royalty through its preserved rooms and lavish decorations.

The castle’s gardens, known as the King’s Garden, provide a peaceful retreat in the city center. Walking through Rosenborg Castle and its grounds allows visitors to connect with Denmark’s monarchy and architectural history.

5. Designmuseum Danmark

Danish design is famous worldwide for its simplicity and functionality. The Designmuseum Danmark showcases this heritage through exhibitions of furniture, fashion, and industrial design from the 20th century to today.

The museum highlights well-known Danish designers like Arne Jacobsen and Hans Wegner. Visitors can learn how Danish design reflects cultural values such as sustainability and craftsmanship. The museum shop also offers unique design pieces which are perfect for an original souvenir.

6. Christiansborg Palace and Tower

The Christiansborg Palace, built in 1733, is very fascinating to walk inside of due to its beautiful architecture and especially its tapestries. In this museum you can learn more about the Danish culture and royal history. The palace is home to the three supreme powers in Denmark: the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court of Denmark and the Danish Monarch. Because of ths, Christiansborg palace is the only building in the world that houses all three of a country's branches of government. Thus, stepping food in this building makes for a unique experience.

The palace has so much to show and its possible to walk around for a very long time. I went to this museum in the beginning of the afternoon which resulted in the museum being very crowded inside, so try to avoid the rush hours. Tickets for the palace cost 215 DKK (€28,79 or $33,49) and you can buy them on site.

Furthermore, the Christiansborg Palace Tower offers the best view of Copenhagen from 106 metres high, as it is the highest in Copenhagen. On your way up inside the tower, small exhibitions of artists are offerd in the hallways which adds to the experience of walking up to the view from the lift. The tower can be visited for free via a separate entrance at Christiansborg Palace. Because of this, the queue to go into the tower can be fairly long, but I went there at the end of the day when the wait was, luckily, pretty short.

7. Copenhagen Museum

If you want to learn more about the history of Copenhagen then the Copenhagen Museum is the place to go. In this museum, stories are told and artefacts are shown from the 12th century up until now. The museum hosts dramatic stories, exciting archaeological finds, and world-class design and architectural history. The shared stories are definitely very interesting and the history is told in a fun way. Tickets can be bought online (https://cphmuseum.kk.dk/en/visit-us) or at the entrance for 110 DKK (14,73 or $17,14).

8. Walk Through Christianshavn and Visit Freetown Christiania

Christianshavn is a historic neighborhood known for its canals and 17th-century architecture. It offers a quieter, more local side of Copenhagen with charming streets and waterfront views.

Within Christianshavn lies Freetown Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood famous for its alternative lifestyle and vibrant street art. Christiania’s open-air galleries and creative spaces provide a different perspective on Danish culture, which emphasizes freedom and community.

9. Talking statues

Talking statues was created by a documentary filmmaker who wanted to let the statues of significant persons in Copenhagen talk. Through a QR-code placed on statues of well-known historical Danish people like Hans Christian Andersen, Soren Kierkegaard and H.C. Ørsted will start talking about their lives in pretty accurate human voices

The Talking statues give the opportunity to some of the most prestigious cultural figures from Copenhagen to tell their own history to the public. With this project, Copenhagen's heritage is explained and shown in a modern way with the statues coming live. It's a very quick and educational way of learning about Copenhagen's most important figures of the past while also exploring the city.

A map of all the talking statues can be found through this link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_Talking_Statues_Copenhagen.png
